Activity 6: (Writing Activity) In small groups, think of how many different actions (verbs) you did since waking up this morning. Write them down.
Examples:
1) wake up
2) get up
3) brush teeth
4) shower
5) get dressed |
6) eat breakfast
7) drive
8) go
9) watch T.V.
10) walk, etc. |
After sharing within the small group, share with the whole class (The teacher can write the actions on the board).
After listing them, can you identify how many are regular (-ed) verbs and how many are irregular? Can you change them to past tense? Now can you use them in a Q/A with long answers (Students should be able to answer all questions in the short and long form).
Activity 7: Have you ever thought about how much we use the word it in English? That simple word it is one of the most difficult words to use correctly in the language.
Have your students fill in the blanks of the following:
Whats that? _____ my new, pet snake, Reggie.
_____ a beautiful day, isnt ____? Yes, ____ sure is.
_____ cold in Colorado this time of year, isnt ____? Yes, ____ is.
Whose is this? ______ mine.
Is ____ far to New York from here? Yes, ____ is.
Can you think of other ways we use it?
If _____ raining tomorrow, we may have to postpone the game.
Is that your brother getting out of that car over there? Yes, ____ is.
What time is _____? _____ two-thirty.
Has my package arrived yet? No, but when _____ does, Ill call you.
Activity 8: Using this, that, these, those (see pages 77-78 in Power Patterns). In small groups, have one student point to an object(s) either close or far away in the classroom. The other students in the group must identify if this, that, these, or those should be used to talk about it. Once that has been established, another member of the group has to make a question and the others can answer it.
Examples:
What is that? Thats a whiteboard.
Are those yours? No, they arent. Theyre the teachers.
Activity 9: The How often game (page 72). Throw a bean bag or stuffed animal around the room asking the question How often do ____? or How often does ____? If the questioner gets the question wrong, he/she has to sit down in the middle. Same for the answerer until the last person remains sitting on the outside in their seat.
Activity 10: Favorite Game? Students must answer on a slip of paper: What is your favorite ______? (Examples: TV show, sport, hobby, dessert, food, movie, book, etc.) Students should put their name on the back of the slip of paper. After everyone finishes, another student (they can take turns) reads the answers to the whole class and the class tries to guess the one who answered.
